Guardians pitcher listed as possible “undervalued free agent”

The 2024 Major League Baseball season is coming to a close. We are now in August and the focus is on the championship races.

But soon the offseason will begin again and players will become free agents. Several teams could use pitchers next winter.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic has listed a key Cleveland Guardians pitcher as a solid option for teams looking to acquire pitchers.

“Alex Cobb went 15-11 with a 3.74 ERA in 46 starts in 2021 and 2022 for the Angels and Giants overall, and posted a 3.87 ERA in 28 starts in 2023,” Bowden wrote Monday. “The Giants dealt him to the Guardians at the trade deadline, and he made his 2024 debut on Friday after recovering from offseason hip surgery. Assuming he stays healthy, Cobb could be an undervalued free agent.”

Cobb has struggled with more than his fair share of injuries over the past few years and has obviously missed most of the 2024 season.

But if he stays healthy, he could be a solid addition to teams in need of pitchers, especially in the back row of the starting lineup, and that’s the kind of starter Cobb profiles to be.

The 36-year-old struggled in his season debut, allowing four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Over the course of his career, he moved between the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles, Angels, Giants and Guardians.
