Gulf Coast hopes for calm conditions at the start of the storm season

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WALA) – Calm, warm waters – Dauphin Island is as peaceful as it gets. Now that September is upon us, locals are praying it stays that way.

“I’m really lucky because my whole family lives on the coast… I don’t like all the hustle and bustle, rebuilding and repairing and preparing for storms. It’s pretty exhausting… So yeah – I’m happy for the quiet season,” Tre Cromwell, Mobile.

The entire Gulf Coast is hoping that the more optimistic predictions of hurricane forecasters for this season are wrong – especially in southwest Louisiana. Tuesday marked the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Laura’s devastation of Lake Charles.

It’s a storm that FOX 10’s Lee Peck, a Lake Charles native, covered. Despite some progress, southwest Louisiana is still in recovery four years later.

The skyline of Lake Charles will change forever. The fate of Capital One’s glass tower, which was badly damaged by Laura, was in limbo until earlier this year. The high-rise is now in the demolition phase.

It was once the crown jewel of the lake region – in a week starting Saturday it is to be blown up.

To put it in perspective, all it takes is one storm to change everything. There are 95 days left in the storm season and it’s going on – the end can’t come soon enough.

“I just hope we get through this season without any broken glass… or really any damage of any kind. I know last year, at least in this part of the world, there wasn’t that much going on, so if we can repeat that, I’d be pretty happy,” Cromwell said.

Meanwhile, there is another sign that we are entering storm season: Thursday, August 29th, marks the anniversary of a storm we all remember: Hurricane Katrina.
