Half-Life Alyx without VR mod gets much better, while the original is dirt cheap

If you have the space and $1,000 to spare for a Valcve Index, Half-life: Alyx is undoubtedly one of the best VR games currently on the market. Valve’s FPS prequel not only hits the expressiveness of VR like Superhot and Beat Saber, but also takes us back to the team’s best world. If you’ve always wanted to play Alyx but don’t have the gear, space, or PC hardware, the Half-Life: Alyx No VR Mod is the perfect alternative. The project is still ongoing, but it just received a colossal update.

With Half-Life 3 closer than ever thanks to the mysterious “Project White Sands,” now is the perfect time to try out one of the best VR games on the market, even if you don’t have a headset. You’ll need a legal copy of Half-Life: Alyx for the No VR mod to work, but otherwise you’re good to go.

You can even play Alyx on the Steam Deck instead of your PC and play through the campaign from start to finish. According to the development team, you can now solve all of the Toner puzzles in Alyx, earn every single Steam achievement, and use a new low-accuracy crosshair when aiming (just like in Half-Life 2).

The team has also made some major changes to the map and player movement to make Half-Life: Alyx work better as a non-VR experience. You should no longer get stuck on objects on the ground like train tracks while moving, map boundaries cannot be broken, and weapon mobility has also been improved.

Although the mod lets you play the entire Half-Life: Alyx campaign without VR, there’s still more to come. The team says additional bespoke animations are on the way, alongside further refinements to movement, the implementation of orb puzzles, and more.

You can still get Half-Life: Alyx on sale now, but keep in mind that the deal only runs until Monday, August 19, so you don’t have long to snag it at 66% off.

With the sequel closer than ever, you can catch up on what exactly happened to Half-Life 3, or check out some of the best PC games to keep you busy instead.
