Haywood Waterways reaches milestone in septic tank repairs

Since 2006, the Haywood Waterways Association (HWA) and the Haywood County Environmental Health Department have used grants to repair 200 defective septic tanks in Haywood County through the Septic Repair Program.

Over the years, funding has been provided from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina’s Pigeon River Fund, the NC Department of Environmental Quality 319 Program, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. These septic tank repairs have prevented up to 72,000 gallons of untreated human waste from entering Haywood County rivers each day.

Over the years, both the HWA and the Department of Environmental Health have held annual workshops to educate on the proper use and maintenance of their septic systems and possible funding opportunities.

Since the WADE program was discontinued in 2006, there is currently no state program to assist homeowners with septic system repair and replacement. The Haywood Waterways Association and the Haywood County Environmental Health Department are proud to offer this program, which is not available outside of the county and is quickly becoming a model for neighboring counties to provide financial assistance to directly protect our waterways.
