Help Me Write gets a new shortcut in the Gmail app as Gemini learns to refine your drafts

Summary

  • Gmail’s Help Me Write feature now includes a new Polish tool to refine drafts with a single click.
  • The “Refine my draft” link now appears below your draft content when it is at least 12 words long.
  • Only available to Google Workspace customers with certain add-ons or the Google One AI Premium plan.

Google’s Help me write, a tool that basically started as an AI suggestion feature for Gmail to help you complete common sentences, expanded to Chrome earlier this year and has evolved into a robust writing companion. The Gemini-powered tool’s functionality includes writing suggestions and rephrasing, and it’s currently rolling out more comprehensive updates that improve the tool’s ability to refine and hone your email drafts.

The generative AI writing function arrives on time

In a new blog post on Workspace Updates, the Mountain View, California-based tech giant announced two new features for Help me write:

  • An option to polish email drafts on web and mobile.
  • Help me write And Refine my draft Shortcuts on Android and iOS devices.

The Refine Draft tool was designed to make typing emails in Gmail easier. It previously offered Formalize, Well thought out, ShortenAnd I feel happy options, although the latter, which updated your design with “creative details,” now appears to have been removed. Instead, users on web and mobile will now see a new polishing Tool that, according to Google, allows you to turn your notes into a “fully formal draft that can be reviewed with just one click.”

The Refine My Draft link will now appear below the body of your email, provided your draft contains at least 12 words.

Additionally, Gmail users will now also see the Help Writing shortcut in the body of the email when the draft is empty, alongside a shortcut right next to the Attach icon. These shortcuts are available on both Android and iOS (not on the web), and tapping them will reveal the full Help Writing feature.

It’s worth noting that the features are only available to Google Workspace customers with a Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, a Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on, or the Google One AI Premium plan.

Although Google said these features are “available now,” so far we’ve only gotten access to the “Help me write” shortcut, while the “Refine my draft” shortcut is still pending. It’s also worth mentioning that these features are enabled by default, and account administrators or end users can’t disable them.
