“Her English is much better than mine” – Gael Monfils beams with joy at the rapid growth of his daughter Skai

Gael Monfils is back on the hard court, showing once again the flair and tenacity that has defined his career. The Frenchman pulled off an impressive 7-5, 6-3 win over Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin in a stunning first-round match at the Cincinnati Masters. That triumph has set Monfils on a promising path, with more accolades on the horizon as he pushes himself even harder in this demanding season. But while he’s fighting his battles on the tennis court, another, far more tender, battle is unfolding off it – one that involves his daughter Skai.

The 37-year-old spoke about a variety of factors, including his career and parenthood, in an interview with Tennis Channel. When the conversation turned to his daughter, the star player admitted that he was inferior to her, at least in English.

Monfils emphasized his daughter’s multilingualism.”So it’s quite funny, you know, it’s quite funny to see how quickly she can adapt. You talk to her in English, she answers you in English. I speak French, she speaks French. And Elina’s family speaks Ukrainian, she speaks Ukrainian.” Monfils and his tennis-playing wife Elina Svitolina were blessed with a daughter in October 2022. Although Skai is not even two years old, she can speak English better than her father.

As the interview continued, the tennis player revealed that despite Skai’s lack of language skills, she was able to understand and say basic things, such as asking for water or expressing her desire to sleep.”Your English is already much better than mine, which is amazing, you know,“, Monfils continued in the interview. Monfils’ love for his daughter has continued to develop over time.

The Ukrainian WTA star gave an interview with fashion in October last year. When asked about her plans for Skai, Svitolina revealed that the couple would encourage her to pursue a career in sport, preferably tennis, but they do not want to force her at any cost. But only if she wants to (start playing tennis)”, Svitolina clarified. The Ukrainian star seems to enjoy being a mother and wants to have more children with Monfils.

It takes a lot of health, and life is not just about tennis… I hope that Gael and I will have a few more children (after the years of competition)”, she continued in the interview. But coming back to their current campaign, both Svitolina and Monfils are on a winning streak. It will be interesting to see if they can convert this victory into something bigger.
