Here are 5 things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend: August 16-18

The school year has started again, but weekends are still free! There are plenty of opportunities for a few hours of fun – with or without kids – at one of these five events this weekend in Allegheny County.

Movie night on the lawn: “The Sandlot”

This summer’s final movie night on the Hazelwood Green Plaza lawn is the 1993 modern classic “The Sandlot.” Make memories with a new generation by watching this coming-of-age film about baseball and friendship that’s a favorite with all ages.

The square opens at 6:30 p.m. and the evening begins with fairground games before the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Be sure to bring blankets or lawn chairs to keep you comfortable during the film.

The event will also feature a variety of vendors and food trucks offering food and drinks. Free popcorn (while supplies last) will also be offered, courtesy of Row House Cinema. For more information, visit hazelwoodlocal.com.

Frostapalooza

A massive supergroup benefit concert will rock the Mr. Smalls Theater in Millvale on Saturday night. A variety of musicians from local groups will come together to perform a mix of cover songs and originals – for two good causes.

The benefit concert brings together 40 musicians in one evening, and each $20 ticket benefits Project Healthy Minds, a nonprofit organization supporting mental health resources, and NextStep Pittsburgh, a local spinal cord injury rehabilitation center. The show begins at 8 p.m.

Days in Bloomfield Little Italy

It’s that time of year once again to celebrate Pittsburgh’s own Little Italy, Bloomfield. The festival is open Friday and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Visitors will enjoy a myriad of delicious food, vendor and business booths, over 30 musical performances, a Miss Little Italy contest, bocce ball and much more. VIP packages are available that include access to VIP areas, a slice of pizza, a bottle of water and a t-shirt.

Comedian Joel Kim Booster at Bottlerocket

Comedian, actor and writer Joel Kim Booster’s star has risen sharply in recent years. From hit comedy specials to the critically acclaimed “Fire Island,” the Chicago native has captured audiences’ attention.

So much so that Friday’s show at Bottlerocket Social Hall in Allentown is already sold out. Luckily, there are two Saturday shows – one at 7 p.m. and one at 9:30 p.m. – that still have tickets available.

Parks On Tap at Highland Park

As part of its ongoing “Parks on Tap” series, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy will open a pop-up beer garden in Highland Park on Sunday.

On the volleyball courts, visitors can enjoy beer from 11th Hour Brewing, grab food from various local food trucks, and enjoy live music. It’s a great opportunity to explore Pittsburgh’s green spaces, meet neighbors and friends, and spend an afternoon benefiting the Parks Conservancy.

Parks on Tap takes place Sunday from 1-7 p.m. Register for the event at pittsburghparks.org.
