Here are 5 things to do in Westmoreland this weekend: August 16-18

The nights are starting to get a little cooler and longer, school is starting up again, and a feeling of fall is in the air. But for now, the warm summer weekends are still here to relax and have fun. Here are some events you can attend while summer is still here:

Allegheny Brass Band

This is the second to last installment of the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Sunday night concert series. This week’s band is the Allegheny Brass Band. The all-volunteer band plays a wide variety of music, from pop to traditional and everything in between.

The free concert begins at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Diamond in Ligonier. For the full band schedule and more information, visit business.ligonier.com.

Art Olympics

If you’re feeling depressed after the Olympics, don’t worry! Head to the Westmoreland Museum of American Art this Sunday for a creative day with an active twist.

The museum, located at 221 N. Main St. in Greensburg, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. there are special activities including obstacle courses, caricaturists, music from a DJ and live performances and – of course – art offerings.

Food trucks will also be located throughout the museum to add to the fun. The event is free and open to the public, but you should register in advance. Visit thewestmoreland.org for full details.

Gravestone workshop

For anyone interested in headstone preservation, or for family members who want to keep their loved ones’ headstones in top condition, the Westmoreland Historical Society is hosting a fascinating hands-on workshop this Saturday.

Starting at 9 a.m., award-winning preservationist William Bray will demonstrate how to clean and maintain old gravestones at the Harrison City Presbyterian Cemetery, located near 2090 Harrison Ave.

Participants are asked to bring lawn chairs, a soft brush and a bucket to practice the techniques taught in the workshop. The event is free. For more information, visit westmorelandhistory.org.

Mt. Pleasant Car Show

Come out this Friday and see cool vintage cars drive through Frick Park on Etze Avenue in Mt. Pleasant. The drive benefits next month’s Glass and Ethnic Festival, so car lovers can drive for a good cause.

It costs $5 to register a car and $2 for the public to participate in the cruise. Gates open Saturday at 5 p.m. for cars and 7 p.m. for spectators. The first 100 cars to participate will receive a dashboard plaque. Classic cars and trucks are allowed in this event. Food will also be available for purchase on site.

Slambovian Circus of Dreams

The free SummerSounds concert series returns this week with the intriguingly named group Slambovian Circus of Dreams. This unique band plays Americana with a spacey, psychedelic twist and will be a one-of-a-kind experience for this Friday night’s lineup.

Hear their music starting at 7 p.m. at St. Clair Park, 135 S. Maple Ave., Greensburg. Oliver Burdo will provide the music starting at 6:15 p.m. For more information on this mysterious artist, visit summersounds.com.
