‘Hidden gem’: Seaside town dubbed ‘the cheap Amalfi Coast’ | Europe | Travel

There is an Italian holiday destination that, according to travel influencers, offers a cheap yet fascinating alternative to the famous Amalfi Coast.

An exquisite seaside town in the Calabria region, Tropea manages to escape most international tourists despite its popularity with Italians. Although an incredible five million travelers visit the Amalfi Coast each year, Tropea remains relatively unknown.

TikTok travel enthusiast @haylsa, with over 430,000 followers, recently uploaded a clip showcasing Tropea’s stunning coastline and azure waters.

Her caption read: “This place is insanely beautiful!! It’s only six hours by train from Rome and is cheaper and quieter than Amalfi or Cinque Terre.”

Another TikToker, @alidalifetravel, visited Tropea last year. She described it as “one of the most beautiful and unique gems” in Italy and told her followers: “If you love small towns like the Amalfi Coast, Puglia and the like, you will absolutely love this!”

“The beach? White sand! Gorgeous, gorgeous, clean water! And the town itself? Super cute (…) If you’re looking for the next place to explore in Italy, I definitely recommend Calabria and Tropea.”

Travel blogger Adventurous Kate has described Tropea as “one of the most spectacular coastal towns in the Mediterranean.”

She wrote: “Tropea is a much better version of an Amalfi Coast beach holiday. You still have stunning scenery – an old town perched on dramatic cliffs. But here you also have large sandy beaches with plenty of space to enjoy them. And the best part? It’s significantly cheaper than the Amalfi Coast.”

Although Tropea does not have its own airport, travellers from the UK can fly directly to Lamezia Terme International Airport, which is about 40 kilometres from Tropea. Flights are available for around £50 and the journey takes just three hours.
