Holy Family Medical hosts free sports medicine clinic for students

WICHITA, Kansas (KWCH) – A Wichita medical clinic is offering free sports fitness screenings to help ease the stress of returning to school for parents of student-athletes.

Holy Family Medical, a nonprofit health organization, offered free screenings at the Atwood Neighborhood Resource Center on Saturday.

Kansas law requires children to undergo a medical examination each year before entering the playing field.

Pediatric nurse Amanda Walden said these annual screenings are important to identify potential health problems that may arise during sporting activities.

“To make sure we know they’re healthy or if there’s anything that needs to be evaluated, like cardiac issues, which are common and important, or even musculoskeletal issues or orthopedic issues if maybe they’ve had an injury and haven’t been cleared to play yet,” Walden said. “It’s important that we make sure they’re cleared and ready to go.”

Holy Family Medical explained that they hold several free screening appointments before school starts because they know it is a busy time of year when many families are trying to get an appointment with a doctor.
