Homeowner concerned after rain washes away retaining wall repairs

Homeowners in Mount Holly fear they will lose even more of their yard after rain washed away work to reinforce a retaining wall.

Residents said they were left with a mud fight while workers waited for the mud to dry.

Channel 9’s Ken Lemon discussed the impact of the damage.

One woman said she could hardly believe how hard it had rained Monday night until she looked into her backyard and noticed some of the rain falling off.

She said wooden beams used to support the backyards of the houses had been removed.

The homeowners association told her they planned to replace the beams with a concrete wall, but then it started to rain.

Homeowners said that without these beams, the earth would have collapsed and the land on the slope would have eroded.

Christina Hunt told Channel 9 this as she walked into her garden for the first time since the rain.

She said she discovered one to three feet of her backyard was missing. Originally, her back door was seven to eight feet from the end of her yard.

Channel 9 has contacted the homeowners association about the program.

A supervisor from the Gaston County Building Inspectorate visited the construction site on Tuesday to inspect the work.

They have granted approvals for this job and his team will expedite the inspection process to assist.

Another rain could destroy a backyard patio, but the buildings should be safe and a patio can be rebuilt, the supervisor said.

The building inspectorate asked the emergency services to work quickly.

A worker from Pinnacle Construction said he could complete the job in a week, but they would have to do some digging by hand.
