Yesterday was the first day the Fall 2024 Pumpkin Spice Latte was available at Starbucks, and with it comes a flood of all the other fall things we love. If you’re looking for a hair color that’s on trend for fall, look no further than Honeycomb Copper. “It’s a fun, vibrant color that reflects the fall leaves, making it seasonally appropriate and eye-catching,” says celebrity colorist and co-founder of IGK Hair Care, Chase Kusero.

Celebrity colorist and founder of the eponymous salon, Rita Hazan, describes the color as an “incredibly rich and bold red,” perfect for fall. “It gives off the exact same vibe as a warm pumpkin latte—it’s just so cozy,” she adds. The shade makes for a seamless transition from summer to fall. “It has these golden hues that are reminiscent of sunshine, but at the same time stays true to a maroon hue that gives off all the fall vibes,” says celebrity extensionist Priscilla Valles.

What is honeycomb copper hair color?

“This is a copper gold with lighter pops of the same shade to bring out the sparkle of the shade and avoid a monotone,” explains celebrity colorist Cherise Wilson. “Elements of light golden honey are the supporting characters of this dream look for redheads.” Celebrity colorist George Papanikolas says the shade combines the rich earthiness of copper with the soft warmth of honey to create a striking, vibrant blend.

“This trend comes in a variety of shades and offers warm, rich colors that are perfect for fall,” says Richy Kandasamy, Vice President of Color Development at R+COLOR. “It’s a great transitional color for anyone looking to add a little summer warmth to their hair before the colder months.”

Who would look good with honeycomb copper hair?

“This look is for anyone who wants to add some spice and some warmth to their hair,” says celebrity colorist Adara Forletta. “Whether your skin tone is warm or cool, your colorist can tailor the tone that’s perfect for you, so no one should be afraid to try this look!” However, Kusero notes that “this trend looks exceptionally good on those with light to medium skin tones, especially those with green or blue eyes.” Shvonne Perkins, master colorist and lead instructor at Madison Reed, says this shade is easier to achieve for blondes or light, heavily highlighted medium brown hair because “if your hair is darker, that may mean pre-highlighting is a necessary first step.”

What to ask for at the salon to get the honeycomb copper look

Perkins says you need to specify when seeking this color in the salon that you’re “looking for a copper blonde and not a copper brown (like cowboy copper) or true copper red.” Because the base is “a deep, luxurious copper, shot through with golden honey highlights that add dimension and brightness,” Papanikolas says you should ask for a permanent color to get the copper base. “Then apply a balayage highlight application, strategically placing the highlights to frame the face, crown and natural part,” he adds. “The result is a multi-dimensional, luminous color that catches the light beautifully and gives the hair a warm, sun-kissed effect.” He notes that finishing with a sheer warm toner like Matrix Tonal Control will help blend the look.

Once the copper base color is fully applied, you can experiment with different highlighting approaches, says Wilson. Strategically placed soft hand-painted highlights will add a few levels of volume and a softer look to the look. For an edgier look, Wilson recommends thick bands or blonde highlights. To top it all off, she recommends a coppery gold gloss on top, whichever option you choose.

Forletta points out that the base color requires a little more maintenance. To achieve the look with less maintenance, she recommends “adding some copper highlights and lowlights to your natural hair color for depth and dimension.” If you want to try the look without fully committing, Perkins recommends the new Madison Reed ColorWonder Demi-Permanent Hair Color in “That’s So Fire” ($34).
