Hospice of the Western Reserve completes acquisition of Hospice of North Central Ohio

Hospice of the Western Reserve, a provider of hospice and palliative care services in Northern Ohio, has completed the acquisition of Hospice of North Central Ohio.

The aim of this strategic alliance is to expand access to high-quality, comprehensive end-of-life care to a larger region, according to a press release.

The news follows an announcement in February that the two community-based nonprofits had entered into a management services agreement that would allow Cleveland-based Hospice of the Western Reserve to begin due diligence in preparation for a full transition.

The reasons for the takeover are increasing competition in the HNCO services sector, economic challenges and the need to stabilize and ultimately grow the company, the press release said.

Hospice of the Western Reserve has more than 45 years of experience in end-of-life care and will expand its service area to 15 counties through Hospice of North Central Ohio to include Ashland, Knox, Richland and other nearby counties.

The acquisition will create the largest team of physicians and hospice and palliative care specialists in the region, providing the most comprehensive range of services and support, the press release said. In addition, the acquisition will strengthen the organization’s ability to support local communities through enhanced education, outreach and volunteer initiatives.

“We are excited to welcome Hospice of North Central Ohio to the Hospice of the Western Reserve family,” said Bill Finn, president and CEO of Hospice of the Western Reserve, in the press release. “This partnership represents an important milestone in our mission to provide exceptional hospice and palliative care. By combining our resources and expertise, we can ensure more people and their loved ones receive the compassionate support they need.”

Joan Hanson, director of palliative care at Hospice of the Western Reserve, served as interim executive director of Hospice of North Central Ohio during the due diligence process. Beginning August 1, she will serve as clinical director of Hospice of the Western Reserve in Ashland, Knox and Richland counties through the end of 2024.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the dedicated staff in Ashland, Knox and Richland counties,” Hanson said in the press release. “Over 90% of HNCO staff have chosen to join the HWR team, demonstrating their commitment to providing compassionate care and support in these communities.”
