  • Boogy Maboi chooses her outfits after deciding on a hairstyle.
  • Recently, the fashion stylist has been experimenting with a mullet haircut.
  • She believes that Rihanna has given new popularity to the mullet hairstyle.

Boogy Maboi is an exceptional fashion stylist and founder of a professional wardrobe rental service called Boogy Bodega.

She is celebrated for her work as a styling expert for some of the world’s biggest stars including Lamiez Holworthy and Khuli Chana, Shekhinah, the late rappers Riky Rick and AKA and many others.

In addition to her iconic work in the fashion industry, Boogy also has an admirable personal style.

Her look starts with her hair and her shoes. When she chats with us, Boogie is sporting a blonde mullet hairstyle.

“Everyone always says it’s like giving them Doja Cat vibes. So I’ll take it. I’ll take it. Doja is a South African.”

The mullet hairstyle entered pop culture in the 1960s and 1980s, popularized by rock musicians such as Paul McCartney and David Bowie. Today, the modern mullet hairstyle is popular among style-conscious and fashion-forward black women. Rihanna, Doja Cat, and Zendaya have sported the look. Locally, Uncle Waffles, Moozlie, actress Nandi Khubone, and—of course—Boogy have tried out the look.

“If you’ve known me for a long time,” says Boogy, “you’ve always recognized me by my really long braids.”

She says of the mullet hairstyle: “It’s part of that unisex style that tends more towards the boy style because it’s kind of a boy hairstyle. I have really long natural hair, so this is kind of my in-between. It fits my androgynous personal style, which tends more towards the masculine side of things, but is still cute. It still has a ‘she would be cute’ feel.”

“Obviously when certain celebrities wear certain hairstyles, they become a really, really big thing. I feel like Rihanna had a really big mullet era (and) of course Rihanna is like our north star, she’s our fashion god. Whatever Rihanna does, we kind of follow her. I feel like Rihanna was kind of a pioneer of the mullet hairstyle for the girls.”

Hairstyle trends of late have had their ups and downs, and Boogy says, “I don’t like being trendy, I don’t like doing what’s popular at the moment. Now I have a mullet, but you don’t see many other people with it at the moment. I see the things I like and then I also know when is the perfect time to jump on.”

In addition to her work as a fashion stylist, she also runs her new business called Boogy Bodega, which she founded in August 2023, under Styled By Boogy.

She says it’s “a wardrobe rental business open exclusively to stylists for productions and shoots. So there are three places you can find me online, all in the interest of local fashion. Always.”
