How I defined my natural texture

My hair has always been naturally wavy, but over the last year I’ve noticed that air drying has made it significantly curlier. This isn’t a huge surprise, as there’s a lot of curly hair on one side of my family. And to be honest, I quite liked the way it looked (and that I could put my styling tools down more often), so I decided to embrace it and embark on a journey to expand my curly hair routine.

After watching my sister try out numerous curl products over the years, I knew a leave-in curl treatment was probably the first step to defining my hair texture. I have tons of natural volume, but that doesn’t happen without some frizz, and a curl treatment could give my curls more shape. But here’s a small problem: I absolutely hate having any kind of residue in my hair; it makes me feel gross.

Thankfully, the first treatment I tried put my concerns to rest immediately. The AG Care Re:Coil Curl Activator didn’t even come close to the texturizing mousses I used in middle school—you know, the ones that leave your hair so crusty it feels like uncooked pasta.

This is how I tested

The instructions recommend applying the curl activator to damp hair, so after a shower, I started dispensing a coin-sized amount of the product onto my head. I immediately noticed that my strands started to curl, which was a sign that the cream was starting to work right away. Honestly, I didn’t really know how much product to apply, so I did a second round. You can let it air dry, but I wanted the full experience, so I decided to use a diffuser over my blow dryer to really activate the treatment.

My honest thoughts

My hair definitely looked the curliest straight after blow-drying, but I really found that it looked better and better as the hours went by. The curls loosened up a little on their own as the day went on, but still held a pretty decent shape even as the evening rolled around. I don’t mean to shame myself, but I found myself standing in front of the mirror for longer than I’d like to admit, admiring how well my hair had accepted the curl activator cream.

I still need to experiment a bit with leave-in curl products, but I have to say that AG Care’s curl activator made it pretty easy for me the first few times I tried it. And the best part: my hair felt soft and hydrated afterwards, not stiff and sticky. A winner.
