How Jerod Mayo specifically ranked Drake Maye among the Patriots quarterbacks

Jerod Mayo certainly sounded like he had not yet decided which Patriots quarterback would start for New England in Cincinnati at the start of the regular season.

Going into Sunday’s final preseason game against the Washington Commanders, Mayo left the opportunity open for rookie Drake Maye to win the contest. Maye rose to the challenge, leading an impressive 88-yard touchdown drive on his first series of the night for the Patriots.

After this performance, has Maye overtaken veteran Jacoby Brissett in Mayo’s eyes? Or is he at least ready to play if Brissett is injured, especially after he left Sunday’s contest?

“I would love to sit here and say 100% that he is the second-best quarterback on our roster right now,” Mayo told reporters, according to a video provided by the team.

When asked to follow up, Mayo replied, “Next question. I’m not sure until I see the movie.”

Although this comment refers specifically to the talented rookie quarterback, the first-year Patriots head coach estimated that New England will make a decision on the starting quarterback for the start of the regular season in the first few days of next week.

With less than two weeks until the first game of the season, the Patriots have yet to make a decision.
