How much does a haircut cost at Singapore’s most popular hair salons?

Thanks to an awkward bob that took forever to grow out, I’ve somehow managed to avoid expensive hair salons for the past year or two. But now that my hair is out of shape and my split ends are ruling my life, I’m on the hunt for a good hair salon. It also happens to be the season for haircuts before Chinese New Year, so… I might as well go.

As I recall, a basic wash, cut and blow dry service cost $28, but those days are behind us – a typical women’s haircut can now cost over $80. Fortunately (and surprisingly), the saving grace is that holiday surcharges seem to have been abolished too. Most popular mid- to high-end hair salons no longer charge extra for Chinese New Year.

Here’s an overview of how much a simple haircut costs in Singapore. Tip: It’s best to sit down for this.

Apgujeong Hair Salon

Apgujeong Hair Salon is a hit with the younger crowd – not only do they specialize in Korean haircuts and styles, but they are also very affordable.

Haircuts start at $20 for short hair. For medium to very long hair, it’s $23 to $35, which is still considered cheap for a Korean hair salon. For men, the set price is $15. Lucky for you.

Their director and lead stylists are all Korean, so if you want curls that will catch your oppa’s eye, try your luck at one of Apgujeong’s 11 branches.

Hairdressing studio Kimage

In recent years, more and more trendy hair salons have emerged, but Kimage is pretty much a household name. Like Apgujeong, Kimage has 11 branches, most of them in shopping malls.

At Kimage, a haircut costs $40 (the same for men and women), which is considered “affordable” these days.

If you want to save even more, you can schedule a haircut with Kimage Cove’s junior stylists. Prices are significantly lower – a haircut costs just $20.

Junior stylists can also perform chemical treatments such as coloring (starting at $50), perming (starting at $50) and rebonding (starting at $100).

If you’re worried about botched work, Kimage offers a 10-day guarantee – you can always come back for another session if something goes wrong.

Shunji Matsuo

Shunji Matsuo is another very popular hair salon chain in Singapore. There are 6 branches and the curious thing is that the prices are different in all 6 branches.

The cheapest outlet is the one in Siglap – prices start at $43 for women’s wear and $38 for men’s wear. The two cheapest outlets are the ones in Orchard. In Ngee Ann City and Orchard ION, the same services cost $60/$52 and $65/$55 respectively.

If you want to head into town but don’t want to spend a lot, the outlet at Far East Plaza is a bit cheaper ($50/$45).

Hair salon NeXt

Next has 2 branches, one in Holland Village and one in Nassim Road. You might think that since they are both in fancy areas, they should have the same prices, but you’d be wrong.

The barber in Holland Village charges $45 for a basic haircut, which is mid-range and relatively affordable. However, the barber in Nassim Road charges almost double – prices start at $75 (men and women).

At Next at Nassim, prices depend on the stylist you choose. For example, Kan Chan and Veena Loh are both senior stylists, but their prices are different ($75 and $85 respectively).

Black Hair Salon

Despite its name Black Hair Salon is actually known for dying her hair every shade of the rainbow. Just check out her Instagram page.

But while a unicorn mane will undoubtedly cost you several hundred dollars, a simple haircut at Black Hair Salon costs $48 for women and $40 for men.

Black Hair Salon is located on Capitol Piazza, which is easy to stop by if you work in the CBD.

Hair Studio Picasso

picasso seems to be a direct competitor to Black Hair Salon – they have the same prices ($48 for women) and are also popular for their colorful look.

They are also both in the CBD. Picasso Hair Studio has two branches; one near Bugis MRT station and the other near Tanjong Pagar MRT station.

However, Picasso Hair Studio seems to offer special offers and discounts more frequently. Follow Picasso Hair Studio’s Facebook page to see their monthly deals.

Salon Vim

Reaching the 50 dollar mark is Salon Vimthe favorite of local bloggers.

Salon Vim has as many influencer ambassadors as it has colors on its hair color palettes. Tricia Ong, Xenia Tan and Mong Chin are just a few of the bloggers who get their hair done at Salon Vim.

This influencer-inspired haircut costs $50, which is expensive in my opinion. There are 2 salons, one in Bugis and the other in Wisma Atria.

Number 76

The OG Number 76 is a famous hair salon in Tokyo known for its salon-cafe concept. Number 76 has 4 branches in Malaysia and only 1 branch in Singapore.

Number 76 Singapore is located in Orchard Central and although the chain’s founder, Daisuke Hamaguchi, is originally from Japan, he is based here.

Of course, the $56 haircut only gets you a haircut from an experienced barber. A haircut from the manager costs $98.

Hair salon Chez Vous

As you would expect from a hair salon called “Chez Vous”, this hair salon in Orchard Road is quite expensive.

Maybe it’s because they don’t have regular “stylists”? Chez VousThe most affordable level of hairdressers are the so-called Associate Directors, who charge $75 for a women’s haircut.

Ouch. You can use that money to get your hair done by a head honcho somewhere else. But if you have the money to spend, why not?

Unlike many trendy salons known for their fancy color jobs, Chez Vous is actually known for its excellent haircuts. If it were a competition between having colorful hair for a week and waking up with manageable hair every day, the latter would definitely have my vote.

Art noise

The last hair salon in this list is the Japanese Art noise in Holland Village. They charge a whopping $86 for a haircut.

Whether or not you want to take the risk with nearly a hundred dollars is up to you, but I probably won’t unless I get an unexpected windfall.

To their credit, their haircuts are probably amazing and the whole Japanese vibe is genuine (everyone there is Japanese). But be aware: you may have to explain your wishes to the receptionist and interpreter, who will then explain them to the hairdresser.

If you want to take the risk, Art Noise actually offers a nice 20% discount to new customers, making each haircut $68.80.
