How much rain was there? Flooding on Long Island – NBC New York

Hundreds of people were stranded and many daring car rescues were undertaken as violent storms dumped nearly a foot of rain on parts of Connecticut over the weekend, culminating in a grand finale late Sunday night that again lashed the three states with heavy downpours and brought travel to a halt.

Rainfall of up to 3 inches per hour was expected overnight. A flood warning was still in effect for Suffolk County on Long Island through Monday morning, while a river flood warning was in effect for Fairfield County, Connecticut. Flash flood warnings that remained in effect overnight expired around sunrise. Check the latest active alerts here.

Connecticut was hardest hit over the weekend, suffering damage from heavy rains early Sunday. The second series of storms brought reports from New York and New Jersey. There was no immediate information on possible injuries.

Across the region, basements were flooded, roads were impassable and homes were evacuated for safety reasons. Amtrak had to suspend service in New York City on Sunday evening, and two Metro-North lines were out of service on Monday morning.

The NYPD warned of severe flooding in Central Park and advised drivers to avoid the 86th Street intersection.

There may be some thunderstorms in the afternoon on Monday before clearing up and humidity levels decreasing on Tuesday. There will be flight delays and cancellations at local airports, so check with your airline before you travel.
