How the Giants could get out of Daniel Jones’ contract before the season

The New York Giants could have a big problem with quarterback Daniel Jones.

Jones’ miserable preseason performance against the Houston Texans on Saturday stunned even Giants head coach Brian Daboll and raises the question of whether New York can really start the season with Jones on the roster.

Although the contract terms mean the team has absolutely no way to release Jones before the start of the season, theoretically there is an opportunity for the team to part ways with Jones before the start of the season.

Over the Cap shows that a trade after June 1 would save the Giants more than $36 million in cap space and only cause a dead cap loss of just over $11 million for the 2024 season.

If you’re wondering how any team in the NFL could justify trading Jones despite his monstrous contract, we can imagine a new franchise would negotiate a much lower deal with the Giants quarterback at the time of a deal.

Jones’ team would have to be willing to renegotiate the contract in its current form, as he could potentially be content to sit on the bench in New York and earn the vast amounts of money he is scheduled to make this season.

Jones would certainly be a top-notch backup for 2024 if an NFL team were to sign him, which is very possible if the Giants are done with him.

There is no public indication from New York that Jones is on the retreat, but Saturday’s disaster in Houston raises the question of what is to come.
