How the Pixel Screenshots app works (Gallery)

Pixel Screenshots is one of the key features of Google’s new Pixel 9 series. The app uses Gemini Nano with on-device multimodality to aggregate your screenshots and make them searchable.

Once this feature is enabled, every screenshot you take will be brought over to this new app. You have the option to import old shots transferred from an old phone.

The experience starts with the screenshot preview in the corner, which has been redesigned to separate the image preview, giving you a wider field of action. Besides sharing and marking (annotating/cropping), there is deleting and the ability to set a date-based reminder in pixel screenshots.

The Pixel Screenshots app makes heavy use of Material You, starting with a carousel of the aforementioned reminders. Then you can manually group screenshots by collections and see a grid of all your screenshots. You can also open a dedicated view by tapping the chevron that Google places in a vertical pill on the right.

On this “All Screenshots” page you can switch between different grid densities. All screenshots include a note about which app they are from and a short title generated by Gemini Nano.

When you open a screenshot, there is a longer summary and suggested actions such as add to calendar, search in Maps, and open in Chrome if it is a web page, where Google creates a deep link. In this view, you can swipe left/right to see more screenshots.

The app has a floating search bar at the bottom with voice input for natural language searches. Google can answer the question directly and show the screenshot where the question came from while displaying other relevant questions. Searching is done in real time and can be quite fast.

Next to that, there’s a FAB for manually adding images from your gallery (Google Photos, Downloads, etc.) or opening the camera to take a new picture of something you want to save.

The more comprehensive Gemini wizard can pass screenshots to Pixel if you append “in my screenshots” (or something similar) to your queries.
