How things stand with Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk – The Mercury News

NASHVILLE — Left tackle Trent Williams’ contract breach became particularly costly Saturday, even though a possible raise will mitigate the NFL-imposed fines he incurs.

Missing the 49ers’ season opener on Saturday will cost him $1.1 million, or one week of his $20.05 million base salary next season. The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement calls for such a penalty, as well as a $50,000 daily fine for missing training camp, which so far amounts to $650,000 for Williams’ training camp boycott.

Williams remains on the Did Not Report list and the 49ers will have to make a change to their roster once he reports, which is expected to happen next month before the Sept. 9 opener.

It’s been three years since he signed a contract that made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL. He now ranks sixth in annual salary. Williams reportedly trains in his hometown of Houston.

AIYUK STATUS

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk also did not travel to Nashville. He will not face the same penalties because he reported to training camp on time last month.

The 49ers have resumed contract negotiations for Aiyuk, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and veteran reporter Jordan Schultz after months of inactivity.

Aiyuk, who has not attended any of the 49ers’ 13 practices, responded in an Instagram comment (to TheSFNiners.com) that the Niners have “two options out there” and need to “pick one and stop sending reports” to the media.

STARS STAY HOME

The 49ers who remained in the Bay Area for rest or rehabilitation include defensive end Nick Bosa, linebacker Fred Warner (foot), wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (shoulder) and running back Christian McCaffrey (calf).

Quarterback Brock Purdy made the trip but is not expected to play. Brandon Allen is expected to play in the first half and Josh Dobbs in the second.

Expected Week 1 starters to suit up for this exhibition game: Safety Ji’Ayir Brown, right tackle Colton McKivitz and guards Aaron Banks and Dominick Puni.
