How to achieve tinsel hair – the ultimate festival hairstyle

Gone are the days of going to a festival just to enjoy the music. Instead, festivals have evolved into spectacles of content creation, thanks to the “influencer Olympics” that is Coachella.

Take Electric Picnic, for example: From August 16-18, hordes of festival-goers flock to Stradbally in County Laois, not only excited to see their favourite artists live, but also with the thrill of carefully choosing their festival look, from clothing to hair and make-up.

Festival-goers shared fashion and beauty tips and tricks on social media, and one eye-catching hairstyle came out on top: tinsel hair.

Like many other trends from the ’90s and 2000s, tinsel hair has been making a comeback lately. It’s the perfect way to add that extra something to your hair without having to resort to highlights and hair dye.

Hair tinsel is available from many retailers, from Boohoo and Amazon to Claire’s Accessories. The good news is that it’s relatively easy to apply!

How do you do that?

Depending on the hair type, tinsel hair lasts about two to eight weeks, according to hairdressers.

Of course, you will need to wash, dry and detangle your hair before starting the process. The slipknot method is recommended for home applications.

First, take a strand of tinsel and fold it in half to find the center point. Make a slip knot with the folded hair, then take a single strand of hair and pull it through the slip knot.

Pull the hair tinsel tight so that it is as close to your scalp as possible, then secure the knot to prevent it from slipping off.

Repeat this process until your hair is shiny. If necessary, trim excess tinsel to the length of your hair ends.
