In Pokémon GOTrainers can only get additional coins for free by Placing a Pokémon in a Gym taken over by their team. If you’re near a gym, you can tell which team has taken over a gym by its color – blue for Mystic, red for Valor, and yellow for Instinct. If an opposing team has taken over the gym, you can clear it by battling them with your own Pokémon.

Although these are trainer Pokémon, they will be AI-controlled in the gym, so you don’t need anything too strong, like the best Master League team in Pokémon GO to defeat them. Once your Pokémon are placed in a Gym, they will receive one PokéCoin for every 10 minutes they spend there before being defeated, at an upper limit of 50 coins. However, please note that you can only earn a maximum of 50 PokéCoins this way. This means that you will not receive any additional coins if you place multiple Pokémon in different Gyms and the total number of coins exceeds 50.
