FaceApp
In the age of selfies, there are numerous apps that can make you look more beautiful, transform you into a dog, or even swap your face for someone else’s.
Now there’s an app that can completely change your gender, make you look older, or put a smile on your face.
The app is called FaceApp and can alter a selfie or a photo stored in your camera roll using neural network technology. FaceApp can add two different types of smiles to your photo, make you look older or younger, or change your gender. There is also a filter called “Flash” that appears to brighten and smooth skin.
The app is by no means perfect. It often added strange colors to people’s skin when making them look younger, and transforming a woman’s face into a man’s face often produced truly terrifying results.
We decided to test it on various tech CEOs and celebrities. This is what it looks like.
We first tried FaceApp on Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Adding a smile worked OK, but the female Steve Jobs is scary and the young Steve Jobs has purple lips.
A photo of Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, however, worked perfectly. The female Evan Spiegel bears a striking resemblance to Natalie Portman…
…but the male Natalie Portman is a little scary. The older Natalie Portman isn’t much better.
The female Donald Trump has lighter skin and slightly longer hair…
…while Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, wears thick eyeliner and has long hair. Dorsey’s aged photo looks almost real.
The aged Beyoncé looks a lot like her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, but the male Beyoncé looks confused, probably because FaceApp couldn’t quite figure out how to completely remove Beyoncé’s long hair.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg looks great with his smile, but his female colleague has some hair problems of her own.
Dwayne Johnson looks pretty strange as a child, but he’s quite dignified as he gets older. He even looks great as a woman.
