UFC 305 Preview

Du Plessis defeated former champion Robert Whittaker to earn a win over then-champion Sean Strickland. He later defeated Strickland in a fight that featured many scorecards. The 30-year-old former kickboxing champion has stated that he is the first fighter living and training in Africa to hold a UFC belt, which has angered Adesanya.

Adesanya is 2-2 in his last four fights. After a long reign as middleweight champion that began in 2019, he lost the belt to rival Alex Pereira, regained it but lost to Strickland after a lackluster performance. He took nearly a year off and now hopes to become a three-time middleweight champion.

The year off has helped Adesanya recover physically and mentally. du Plessis believes Adesanya’s best years are behind him and he now wants to defend his gold medal for the first time.

“It comes down to seeing the hunger, seeing the fire in someone’s eyes, and I don’t see that,” Du Plessis told mainevent via MMA Fighting. “I can’t remember if he specifically said he was retiring, but he said he was taking a couple of months off. I don’t remember if he said he was retiring, but it almost felt like that, and everyone would have understood that.

“He did what he had to do in the sport and he reached the pinnacle of what he could do in his career as far as winning streaks go. He’ll never have that streak again. He’s defended the belt as many times as he has. He doesn’t have the time or anything to top that, so what is he doing this for?”
