Hungary celebrates the founding of the state with cheap beer: Here’s where to drink it!

The Hungarian government is organizing celebrations to mark the founding of the Christian state of Hungary from August 17 to 20. To offer guests affordable drinks, the government will impose a price cap on several products, including canned beer.

The energy and economic crisis, hand in hand with all-consuming inflation, has swept Europe and the world in recent years, but Hungary has probably been hit hardest. Food price inflation has reached more than 100% in recent years, making a holiday on Lake Balaton almost as expensive as in Croatia. We have covered this shocking development in detail in THE Article.

No price cap for the celebrations

The Orbán cabinet “fought” against the sharp rise in prices by introducing price caps on products such as fuel and basic foodstuffs. However, experts agree that such measures only made the situation worse. Meanwhile, measures such as the government’s unique price monitoring system have had no noticeable effect.

However, the Orbán cabinet is keen to attract Hungarians, for example with events such as the St. Stephen’s Day celebrations. According to a previously published statement, they are preparing more than a hundred colourful programmes that will end with a grandiose fireworks display. In July, we will wrote that it will be more spectacular (and expensive) than ever before, stretching 5 kilometers along the Danube instead of 4.3 kilometers. Some estimates suggest that 38.2 million euros will be spent on fireworks alone.

Accordingly 24.huThe Hungarian government is preparing cheap offers for food and beverages “to enable everyone to buy affordable drinks and food”. Therefore, the prices of mineral water, canned beer and pretzels will be significantly below the market price between August 17 and 20.

The new prices are 200 forints for 0.5 l of mineral water (0.5 EUR), 400 forints for canned beer (1 EUR) and 300 forints for a pretzel (0.75 EUR). Compared to last year, this represents a price increase of 50 forints for the first two food items (33% and 15% respectively). The average inflation in Hungary was 17.6%.

The affordable products are available at the program’s 19 official locations. HERE will be the card, but it doesn’t work yet.
