The television personality was told “early in my career” that “curly hair doesn’t look professional.”
Sunny Hostin is proud of her curly hair!
In the episode from Tuesday, April 30, Behind the table Podcast with The view A caller praised the daytime talk show host, who supported executive producer Brian Teta, and praised her for wearing her natural hair.
“I have a question for Sunny. I loved you on the show from the beginning and I think one of the most striking differences I noticed is your appearance,” the caller began.
“Your hair is different and beautiful, and you’ve gone from a more traditional business casual look to something I would describe as just wow,” the caller continued. “I’m 25 and just starting to embrace my curls as a black woman, so what inspired you to make this change?”

The caller also admitted that from her own experience, caring for natural hair can be “a lot of work.”
“Oh, I love that question and I love that she noticed,” Hostin replied.
The television personality admitted that at the beginning of her career, wearing her hair in its natural, unaltered state was frowned upon.
“You know, early in my career as a lawyer, I was told that curly hair looked unprofessional and unkempt. And so for years I wore this slicked-back ponytail. Right? It was a little curly in the back, but not really, and I slicked my hair back,” Hostin said.
She added that not much has changed since she moved from the courtroom to working in front of the camera.
“And then when I started doing television, one day a hairdresser talked me into blow-drying my hair, which is very damaging for women with naturally curly hair,” Hostin said.
She then explained how her boss’s reaction had influenced her self-perception at the time.
“So I did that and then I got a call from an executive at CNN, and the person said, ‘This is your look. You look so professional.’ So there it was again, that professional professional. And I literally thought I had to look a certain way to pull that off.”

According to Hostin, it was only during the pandemic, without a glamour team, that she was able to return to her roots.
“And then the pandemic came. And I don’t know how to make my hair other than curly,” said hostin Teta about her not-so-new beauty routine.

“I was on my own. And I got so much positive feedback from so many people, including one host who said, ‘You know, I’m going to wear my hair curly, too,'” Hostin said.
“I remember Sheinelle Jones from NBC contacting me. Shirleen Alicott from ABC News Local contacting me and they said, ‘You give me the courage to do it,’ and that meant a lot to me.”
