In the Monday edition of Zolak & BertrandScott Zolak made it clear that he believes the door is open for Drake Maye to start in Week 1.

If Jacoby Brissett can’t get it done…

Scott Zolak:

If you had to bet, would you bet on Drake Maye to start in Week 1?

Marc Bertrand:

NO.

Scott Zolak:

I wouldn’t either. A week ago we all agreed that Jacoby Brissett was the starter, and that’s clear. Not even close. It’s amazing how that changed in a week because of one preseason game.

Marc Bertrand:

Who did you flip with?

Scott Zolak:

Here they’ve flipped the narrative and said that he actually has a chance to beat him by the end of training camp or the end of next week, and that he would be the Week 1 starter, so Drake Maye.

Marc Bertrand:

Wait a minute. Do you mean what the coaches are saying? Or what Jerod Mayo said there? Eliot Wolf spoke yesterday, we’ll get into that in more detail. Or do you mean us?

Scott Zolak:

I think it’s more on us than the fans. The fans obviously want to see the kid play. How could you not after Thursday night. But you also have to be aware of who he’s with and who he’s playing against. I mean, you’re playing threes and fours. They didn’t use their starters. He’ll get another chance this week. But I’m not sure who he’s playing against yet. What are the Commanders going to do? How are they going to approach the game? What’s interesting to me is that Mayo also said very quickly afterward that everyone is playing. The whole offense has to play. I think what’s emerging here is that they’re suddenly nervous about Brissett because he played so well, because he looked so shaky in the pocket on Thursday… I think they’ve got him on film now and they’ve got to say, oh man, how do we get him in shape before the year starts? And if he doesn’t make it, I think the door is open for the kid.
