“I’m a little sad”

André 3000 gets involved in the dispute that has taken the music world by storm: Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake.

In a recent interview for his cover story with Crack Magazine, André spoke openly about the feud between the two Grammy-winning rappers.

“I got a little sad at some point,” he said. “In the early rap battles, kids rapped against each other in the park. But today, it’s not just people who rap. There are people with 100 employees. Livelihoods, empires, companies, deals are at stake – everything can be at stake. If you have nothing to lose, then of course it’s doable. But if I’ve already done it, I’m not sure if it’s even worth it anymore.”

About the future and the metro boom “Like That,” released in March, features Lamar’s verse that reverently references André. Lamar raps, “When he walks around with that stick, he ain’t André 3K.”

“As a 49-year-old rapper, you just love getting a shoutout,” the Outkast rapper says of Lamar’s shoutout in “Like That.” “But as a rapper, I walk around with that stick. So that was a reference for me too and I tried to find a way to use it. But Kendrick used it, so I had to say, ‘Yeah, he got it.'”

While he’s not entirely happy with the feud between K-Dot and Drizzy, the 49-year-old legend knows hip-hop is a competitive genre – and he’s no stranger to releasing diss tracks over the years. He says, “You got feelings… when n***as say some sophisticated sh*t, you immediately come up with lines.”

Lamar’s ubiquitous diss track “Not Like Us” debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May, according to Billboard, and is still at No. 3 – leading many fans and critics alike to believe that the 37-year-old rapper has won the battle against Drake.
