Damian Wayne had a lot of trouble fitting into the Bat-Family when he first appeared. Batman had to come to terms with the fact that he suddenly had a biological child that he knew nothing about. Dick Grayson was away in Blüdhaven as Nightwing and didn’t meet Damian for a while, and Damian Wayne and Tim Drake’s first meeting didn’t go well. As a result, Damian had very few friends in the Bat-Family, and although Damian claims he doesn’t care if anyone likes him, He found an important ally in Alfred Pennyworth. While everyone else dismissed Damian as a potential monster and definitely a murderer, Alfred did not.

Although all the other members of the Bat-Family learned to appreciate and care for Damian in their own way, no one accepted him as quickly or consistently as Alfred.

In the course of their shared history Alfred Pennyworth was always one of the few friends Damian had. While all the other members of the Bat-Family would appreciate and care for Damian in their own way, none accepted him as quickly or consistently as Alfred. Because of this relationship, it makes perfect sense that Alfred gave him his very first Robin suit. When Damian first showed up in Gotham, he declared himself Robin, beat Tim half to death, and then murdered a criminal on his first night. When Alfred gave him the suit years later, it showed that he had finally earned it.

So that Damian will continue to honour Alfred’s memory

Even years after his death, Alfred’s influence is still felt in every single member of the Bat Family. Alfred is the one who inspired Nightwing and gave him the means to save Blüdhaven in a new way. Alfred is also the one who set Damian on a truly heroic path. Without Alfred’s unconditional love and support, Damian might have returned to his mother Talia and become the villainous leader of the League of Assassins after the Bat Family’s rejection. Thankfully, Alfred was able to give Damian Wayne a new destiny as Robin.
