Injured center and only starter for the Jets active in the season opener against the Commanders

The New York Jets have announced the names of 28 players who are not on the roster for Saturday’s season opener against the Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium.

Topping the list of inactives is future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has already missed the team’s first two practice games. One projected offensive starter was notably left out. Second-year center Joe Tippmann apparently needs additional game reps to fix the snapping issues that plagued him in the preseason.

Tippmann, who has not appeared to have any trouble in any of his 10 starts at center in 2023, has sent several snaps over Rodgers’ head during training camp drills this summer.

“There’s some technical stuff in there. It’s not mental. He’s not nervous. Like I said, we’re trying to maximize his athleticism, which means we’re asking a lot of him from an athletic standpoint. We’re pushing him and he just needs to learn the timing and rhythm and all that stuff and then he’ll get it under control. That’s one of the least things I’m worried about,” head coach Robert Saleh said after the Green & White’s Aug. 3 practice.

Tippmann hasn’t fully resolved the issue yet, which is likely why he’s not playing in the first preseason game. None of the likely Week 1 defensive players suited up for Saturday’s preseason game, leaving Tippmann the only one on either side of the ball.

Experienced backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who competed as QB1 in Thursday’s joint practice, was not counted among the inactive players.
