Insider: Yankees looking for Giants star hitter in free agent

The New York Yankees’ upcoming offseason will be dominated by the Juan Soto sweepstakes, but other names are hitting the market as well.

While the focus is on the Soto sweepstakes, the Yankees also have to address other areas of their roster, including the bullpen and third base.

With Gleyber Torres potentially finding a new home as a free agent, the Yankees would most likely move Jazz Chisholm to second base to fill the void, leaving a pretty large hole at the hot corner.

One of the biggest names on the market for this position is Matt Chapman of the San Francisco Giants. He is expected to give up his current contract ($17 million AAV) for a better one.

According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Yankees were one of the possible candidates to sign Chapman if he did opt out.

“…the Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, Washington Nationals, Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees. They should all at least be calling this winter,” Passan wrote.

Re-signing Soto is a top priority for the Yankees and should be their focus until the race is decided.

It remains to be seen whether the Yankees can get a deal done with Chapman if they re-sign Soto, who is likely to get a $500 million deal this winter.

Either way, Chapman is a fantastic pick if the money comes together. He is a spectacular defender with outstanding exit velocity, bat speed, run rate and power.

It remains to be seen how aggressive the Yankees can be in signing Soto as part of a mega deal, and Chapman is likely to have plenty of suitors.
