Inspectors find spoiled food and moldy substance

During recent routine inspections of local establishments, inspectors discovered five critical and 24 non-critical violations.

For example, employees were found without hairnets and dirty areas were discovered.

Wayne County Health Department staff collected these concerns between July 17 and August 10.

Establishments must display their most recent routine inspection form near the main public entrance for potential customers to view.

Critical violations

  • July 31: Fountain City Food Mart, 402 US 27 S. Fountain City. Two critical and three non-critical items. Critical: Food temperatures in the cooler were above 10 degrees. Discarded. Disinfectant bottle was not labeled. Had to be corrected the same day. Non-critical: Cookies marked for sale did not have an ingredient list. Paper towel dispenser did not work and there was no soap at the hand sink. All had to be corrected the same day. FOLLOW-UP: August 1, cooler was discarded.
  • July 29: Parlor Donuts, 533 National Road W., Richmond. One critical and one non-critical defect. Critical: The ice cream scoop at the counter was stored with the handle in contact with ice used for customers’ drinks. Non-critical: The hair of the employee preparing the food was not adequately held back. Both were corrected.
  • July 24: Richmond 50 Inc., 501 S. Fifth St., Richmond. One critical issue: No hot water during inspection. Stop serving coffee until problem is fixed. Must be fixed by August 4.
  • July 17: Naomi’s, 15557 Goose Heaven Road, Cambridge City. One critical and one non-critical error. Critical: Home-prepared “coffee base” is used for iced coffee. Home-prepared items are not allowed. Non-critical: Ice cream scoop is kept in standing water. Both must be corrected the same day.

Non-critical violations

  • August 8: McDonald’s, 3126 National Road W., Richmond. One non-critical case: Employee worked with open food without hair protection. Corrected during inspection.
  • August 7: The Eatery, 406 US 27 S., Fountain City. One non-critical issue: The ceiling in the walk-in cooler was dirty. Must be fixed by August 17.
  • July 31: Richmond Beverage Solutions, 1590 NW 11th St., Richmond. One non-critical failure: No thermometer in the sandwich refrigerator. Must be corrected by August 1.
  • July 31: 1201 Smart, 1201 N. E St., Richmond. Four non-critical issues: Mold-like substance on lid inside ice machine and on soda jets. Both to be addressed same day. Gap at west exterior door. No testing kit. Both to be addressed in seven days. FOLLOW-UP ACTION: Aug. 1 visit: Two non-critical issues found. Mold-like substance remained. Must be addressed by Aug. 2. Aug. 2 visit: Mold-like substance addressed. Aug. 7: Two non-critical issues remained: Gap at west exterior door. No testing kit. Both to be addressed by Aug. 14.
  • July 30: The Coney Island, 750 S. Seventh St., Richmond. Two non-critical items: Lights in walk-in cooler were not working. Must be corrected by August 10. Employee’s hair was not tied back properly. Must be corrected same day.
  • July 30: Just 1 More Bar & Grill, 743 S. Fifth St., Richmond. One non-critical failure: The correct test kit was not available at the time of inspection. Must be corrected within seven days.
  • July 26: El Amigo Mexican Food, 1520 N. A St., Richmond. Two non-critical issues: The range hood and lights were dirty. The outside drain was leaking and needed to be repaired. Both must be fixed by August 6.
  • July 24: Lucky Three Food Mart LLC, 1605 E. Main St., Richmond. A non-critical case: Cartons of disposable food containers and cups were stored directly on the floor instead of 6 inches above it. No deadline specified.
  • July 22: Warehouse Cafe, 213 N. Third St., Richmond. One non-critical issue: The soda jets needed cleaning. Must be addressed immediately.
  • July 19: Soul Authentic, 1903 N. A St., Richmond. One non-critical error on July 19: The test kit provided does not measure quat disinfectant. To be corrected by July 29. May open. No violations on August 3 and 10.

Pre-operational

  • July 26: Biggie Spudz Food Truck, 641 NW L St., Richmond. Approved to open.
  • July 22: Chipotle Mexican Grill of Colorado, 2511 Chester Blvd., Richmond. Approved to open.
  • July 19: Retro Jake’s, 417 N. Eighth St., Richmond. Food and beverage service temporarily closed. Contact WCHD for reopening inspection.
  • July 17: Mexicali, 233 S. 14th St., Richmond. Approved to open.

Complaint investigated

  • July 29: Frisch’s Big Boy, 3704 National Road E., Richmond. Bare hand contact complaint. No problem found. No violations noted during inspection.

No violations

  • Richmond: SK Hope Corner Store, 100 Snow LLC #2 (100 Richmond Ave.), CVS/Pharmacy (East Main and Chester Boulevard), Brookville Ice Co., Dollar General (both National Road West locations), Mi Ranchito, Menards, D & R Hideaway, Chipotle Mexican Grill (National Road East), Subway (Chester Boulevard), The Milk House (West Main), The Bakery, American Multi Cinema Inc., What the Truck, Domino’s Pizza (National Road East), Tally Ho Pub, Home 2 Suites. Employer Vending Machines: Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Richmond Baking Co., B&F Plastics, AVI Food Systems, Purina Animal Nutrition, Anthony Wayne Services, Elevator Equipment, Lowe’s.

Inspections

The Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice a year. When serious violations are found, inspectors check to see if the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also visit establishments when citizens file complaints.
