The costs of Carling, San Miguel, Guinness, Coors, Stella Artois and Budweiser were calculated to determine the ranking of UK cities with the best pint per price.

The crown goes to the city of Preston in Lancashire, which offers pints for an average of £3.07, according to data collected in 2023.

Ironically, the best place for pints is the city where the phrase “teetooth” is rumored to have originated – although total abstinence from all alcohol might be difficult, given that a pint of Coors costs £2.49.

For a bargain price, of course, head to Bangor in Wales, which comes in just behind Preston in second place but misses the top spot by a penny: Bangor offers a pint for £3.08.

At just £2.58 for a Carling and £3.61 for a Stella Artois, Wales’ oldest city could also become its most popular.

If you want to quench your thirst after exploring Snowdonia, you can also get a Guinness for £3.09.

If you drive an hour and a half east you will reach our third place winning town – Wrexham.

On the Welsh border, in the area that only gained city status two years ago, you can get a pint for £3.11.

If you aspire to a life of luxury and have a penchant for high-priced pints, try Stoke-on-Trent, where a San Miguel costs £3.61.

According to the study, this is 21% cheaper than the average price of a regular pint in London.

The average pint in Stoke-on-Trent costs £3.12, just 5p more than the lowest average.

Rounding out our top five is Sunderland, so if you fancy watching a football match whilst drinking a pint that costs on average just £3.14, it’s time to spend the bank holiday in this famous port city.

The top ten British cities with the cheapest pints:

  1. Preston – £3.07
  2. Bangor – £3.08
  3. Wrexham – £3.11
  4. Stoke on Trent – £3.12
  5. Sunderland – £3.14
  6. Newport – £3.19
  7. Wolverhampton – £3.23
  8. Nottingham – £3.27
  9. Bradford – £3.28
  10. Swansea – £3.30

Even though Londoners complain about the cost of living and non-Londoners complain about Londoners, there are some things we can all agree on.

There’s nothing better than a pint that doesn’t rob you of your London subsistence level.

In the capital, a £7 pint is the harsh reality, but if you don’t fancy paying higher prices, there are a few places that charge a little more than the national average.

The leader on the western outskirts is Ealing with an average fee of £3.46.

You won’t just be staring at the carpet at Whetherspoon when you spot Coors for £2.79.

In second place is the ever-popular inner borough of Hackney, where you can pay £3.71 for a pint despite complaints about rising prices in the area.

Further south, we can award the bronze medal to Croydon, where the average price of a pint is £3.75, making it the last London borough to stay safely under the £4 mark.

In fourth and fifth place are Islington and Greenwich, where they charge £4.11 and £4.70 respectively.

The price in Greenwich can still boast that it is less than 10% above the London average, although it is 39% above the national average.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator PRO SL, said: “The analysis provides an excellent guide to where people will get the most for their money when going out to do something with their loved ones this holiday weekend.

“If you don’t want to spend too much money on a night out, head to cities like Preston or Nottingham, where drinks are on average cheaper than elsewhere in the country, and you may find a lower bill than you would normally expect.”

“This makes going to the pub even more tempting – especially when the summer sun is still shining.”

Average cost of pints across London (in Wetherspoons pubs):

  1. Ealing-£3.46
  2. Hackney – £3.71
  3. Croydon – £3.75
  4. London – £4.11
  5. Greenwich – £4.70
  6. Camden – £5.12
  7. Westminster – £5.57
  8. London (Central) – £5.86
