Internet obsession over baby born with ‘placenta perm’

A little girl has taken the internet by storm after her mother posted a video of her full head of hair.

Flatt (@fatimaflatt on Instagram) also added that her husband’s hair was so thick that he got his first haircut at just 6 weeks old.

Flatts’ video begins with clips of Jemayah as a small baby with a full head of hair (as she was born), overlaid with the text: “She has a placenta perm, the hair will eventually fall out.”

The term “placenta perm” was first used by one of the nurses at the hospital where Flatt gave birth. They assured the family that Jemayah’s body hair would not last long into her toddler years – and she was right.

“The hair on her head never fell out, but the texture changed and it went from straight to curly, as you can see in the videos,” Flatt said. Newsweek.

In the video montage, which has been viewed nearly 9 million times, Jemayah grows from a baby to today’s three-year-old, with her hair getting longer and thicker with each clip.

As a baby, Jemayah’s jet black hair lay flat on her head, but as she grew older, her hair resembled an ’80s-style perm.

Part of the video shows Jemayah dressed as a Disney princess Vaiana – The wonderful world of love – dancing to the film in the island ensemble.

In a separate video on her page, Flatt uploaded the full clip with audio, which has been viewed 46 million times.

When asked how Jemayah treats her curls, Flatt replied: Newsweek that her daughter has not only accepted her hair but has made it a part of her identity.

“She loves it when I do her hair,” Flatt said, adding that Jemayah took the initial attention in her stride and didn’t let the spotlight bother her.

Over 776,000 Instagram users liked Flatt’s video and although comments were disabled, Flatt said Newsweek that the response on social media had been “overwhelmingly positive” with many people expressing their support and curiosity about their daughter’s curls.

Given the online attention, it seems as if the Flatt family has a minor celebrity in their ranks.
