Iron Range plant must pay 0,000 fine after worker dies

VIRGINIA, Minnesota – Minnesota OSHA has fined a trucking company in the Iron Range area more than $620,000 after a worker died.

The worker died in March at the Wayne Transports, Inc. plant in Virginia, Minnesota.

Wayne Transports is a large bulk trucking company based in Rosemount, Minnesota. The company currently has 12 trucking terminals that handle approximately 700 truckers and over 1,000 trailers.

Following the employee’s death in July, MNOSHA Compliance inspected Wayne Transports. Following that inspection, the agency issued 10 severe warnings to Wayne Transports for violations of general industry regulations.

A government report shows that MNOSHA found that Wayne Transports did not adequately protect its employees from confined space hazards.

In addition to the confined space allegations, MNOSHA Compliance has accused Wayne Transports of not having safety data sheets for chemicals in the tankers and not making them easily accessible to employees at their work stations, and of not having established and maintaining a joint worker-employer safety committee, according to information provided by the state.

Wayne Transports denies the violations.

Northern News Now contacted Wayne Transports on Wednesday morning but received no immediate response.

The Department of Labor and Industry did not provide specific details about the employee’s death or his identity.
