Is Drake Maye not QB1 because the coaches aren’t ready?

In the Friday edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Tim McKone and Paul Perillo asks if the coaching staff is holding back Drake Maye because he’s not ready as a team. Did he even have the same chance as Mac Jones in his first year?

Is this just consolation with Jacoby Brissett?

Tim McKone:

I wonder, when we look at the way they’ve treated Drake Maye right now, is he’s being held back because they think he or the coaching staff isn’t ready. What I mean by that is: I look at Jerod Mayo and his experience and the only quarterback he’s seen was Mac Jones. That quarterback is getting ruined because his confidence is completely destroyed in year two. Turns out, benching a quarterback on Monday Night Football isn’t the best thing for his confidence, right? So we saw his confidence get completely ruined in year two by the way he was treated with Bill Belichick. I look at Alex Van Pelt, the first-year offensive coordinator, as far as making plays and everything that’s on his plate. He’s more comfortable with Jacoby Brissett than he is with the rookie quarterback, and I wonder if Drake Maye is actually being held back because the coaching staff wants to get some familiarity with where things are before putting Drake Maye in that situation. It’s not necessarily that Drake Maye wasn’t necessarily ready, and I think a lot of that is because of the first preseason game with the few snaps there. I don’t know if there was ever a chance here for Drake Maye to actually take that job, like we talked about Mac Jones taking the job from Cam Newton in his rookie year.
