It is getting cold in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California

According to officials, it was too cold in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California this weekend and snow fell there.

Snow fell in the middle and upper elevations of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains Friday night into Saturday, AccuWeather meteorologist Elizabeth Danco told USA TODAY in an email. On Saturday, portions of Highway 89, which runs through Lassen Volcanic National Park, were closed due to the scattered snowfall.

The National Weather Service estimates that about three inches of snow fell in the region.

Despite the cold, highs of between 14 and 23 degrees Celsius at higher elevations and between 21 and 27 degrees Celsius at lower elevations are expected on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Deputy MP registers unusual snowfall

“Although it is rare to see snow this time of year, it reminds us of the unpredictable nature of our beautiful Sierra Nevada,” says a post on Madera County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page on Saturday.

A deputy captured video of snowfall in eastern Madera County, 33 miles north of Fresno, California, on Saturday and posted it on the sheriff’s office Facebook page.

The sheriff’s office asked anyone driving through or planning to visit the Minaret Vista area to be cautious and “be prepared for the cool weather.”

Why did it snow in August?

A cold snap from the Gulf of Alaska brought chilly weather to the West Coast, ABC 10 reports.

First, it snowed on Mount Rainier in Washington state, and on Saturday a thin layer of snow was also felt in California.
