“It’s about so much more than just cheap trips to France” – Town twinning seeks new members

Shifnal has been twinned with the French town of Machecoul St-Même, near Nantes, for 36 years.

Due to their similar size and population structure, the cities were twinned in 1988. Over the years, links have developed between sports and cultural clubs and societies, as well as between individuals and families.

The Shifnal Twinning Association (STA) says the involvement “offers so much to members”.

“You not only make friends with our French hosts and visitors, but also with the people in and around Shifnal,” said a spokesman for the group. “It’s about so much more than just cheap travel to France.”

The association is committed to the community and, on its initiative, former French soldiers took part in the recent D-Day commemorations with members of the Royal British Legion in Shifnal.

It has helped to establish links between Shifnal Tennis Club and Machecoul Tennis Club.

In association with the Park House Hotel, the STA hosts a French lunch with talks on French food and wine. In the past, links have been made between choirs and football clubs.

The STA has come together to support the treasure hunt in the town, with toys distributed around the town bearing French names. Primary schools in Shifnal have also received work plans for French lessons and ‘language passports’ to help track children’s learning progress and skills.

Members of the STA Committee attended Remembrance Day services in France and took part in the unveiling of a memorial commemorating the fatal plane crash involving English and Canadian soldiers at Machecoul St. Même during World War II.

These connections are supported by a system of corporate memberships, which reduces costs for everyone involved.

There are 10 social events per year, including participation in the Christmas lighting event in the town centre. A photography exhibition is held in the Village Hall, in the aptly named Machecoul Room, with the support of the Co-operative Society, who provide refreshments for visitors.

STA members are warmly welcomed in Machecoul every two years and welcome the French in the intervening years.

“For over 36 years, friendships have been formed for life. Visits to both countries include trips, social events, dinner and much more! Excursions around Shifnal are open to STA members as well as the French and are as entertaining and educational for us as they are for the French,” said the STA.
