Jerod Mayo admits Drake Maye has surpassed Jacoby Brissett

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo provided an update on the quarterback battle between Jacoby Brissett and Drake Mayo on Monday.

The coach stated on WEEI’s “Greg Hill Show” that the rookie has outperformed the veteran on the football field. He also claimed that the team would consider all of the training, including the spring, when making the final decision on the quarterback position.

Maye certainly played the role, and Sunday night’s season finale was the icing on the cake. Brissett was injured during the loss to the Washington Commanders, and that gave Maye a chance to play longer. The former North Carolina star completed 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.

By comparison, Brissett had 36 yards and one interception all preseason. On Sunday, he completed 2 of 4 passes for just 19 yards.

“I want to say this is a real competition and I would say Drake has outperformed Jacoby at this point,” Mayo said, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “When we say that, we have to take into account all the work that goes back to the spring and the start of training camp. And we’ll see where we end up. But those are the conversations that are going to be had here in the next few days.”

It’s still a little surprising that Mayo has been so open about the battle for the quarterback spot thus far, and one has to wonder how the battle itself will play out with the season opener just two weeks away.
