If the season started today, New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo would have full confidence in rookie quarterback Drake Maye to lead the offense.
Jacoby Brissett is currently the No. 1 quarterback, but Maye has narrowed the gap on the veteran. According to Mayo, the team expects to make a decision on its starting quarterback as early as Monday night.
Mayes’ confidence has grown in the last two preseason games. In both games combined, he completed 8 of 14 passes for 66 yards and scored a rushing touchdown in last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The repetitions and in-game practice are obviously paying off and Mayo is feeling more comfortable with Maye’s knowledge of the offense.
“100 percent. I think he’s ready to lead a team group,” Mayo told the media on Wednesday.
When it comes to pre-snap surgery – if Drake Maye HAD to start, does Jerod Mayo feel ready?

Maye’s willingness to contribute to the offense doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be a starting starter right away, but it does mean the Patriots could turn to him without hesitation if Brissett starts to struggle.
It is probably only a matter of time before the newcomer takes the reins.
