Jerod Mayo doubles down on his plan for Drake Maye against the Eagles

Drake Mayes’ limited appearances in the Patriots’ season opener came as a surprise on Thursday, even though that was always the plan in New England.

Maye only played six snaps in his first training camp for the Patriots against the Carolina Panthers, giving him a very brief glimpse of the No. 3 overall pick.

Jerod Mayo assured that Thursday is just one game and that Maye will have plenty of time to develop in the upcoming matches. He reiterated this on Sunday, when the Patriots prepare for joint practices and another preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Yeah, it’s a big week for all quarterbacks to really make progress,” Mayo told reporters. per video provided by the team. “Drake will definitely play more this week. But remember, any time you train against a team, they will have a lot of good experience against someone else and on that basis we will see how they will play in a game. But that only applies to positions.”

Jacoby Brissett will participate in training camp and will most likely enter the regular season as the starting quarterback for the Patriots.

Meanwhile, Maye and Joe Milton III, who gave the offense a new lease of life in the opening game, have their next opportunity to demonstrate their development with the Patriots.

Kickoff between the Patriots and Eagles is scheduled for Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium.
