Jerod Mayo makes confusing comments about Drake Maye’s launch amid Jacoby Brissett uncertainty

The New England Patriots have had a very interesting and dramatic offseason to say the least. They have changed head coaches and signed new quarterbacks in an attempt to change the identity of the team.

The most exciting signing this season was the selection of Drake Maye. Fans were eager to see their new rookie quarterback on the field. The likelihood of Maye being the starter increased after Jacoby Brissett injured his shoulder in the final game of the season against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

But despite the uncertainty surrounding Brissett, Mayo has made some puzzling comments.

Since last night’s game ended, Mayo has made confusing comments about Drake Mayes’ status as a potential starter.

Last night after the game he said Maye was the second best quarterback on the team, but this morning he said Maye surpassed Jacoby.

He continued to praise Maye on WEEI.

“It’s a real competition … and I would say Drake has outperformed Jacoby at this point. We have to take into account all the work that went back to the spring and the beginning of training camp. We’ll see.”

Jerod Mayo

In the same breath that he raved about Maye, Mayo talked about the difficulties rookie quarterbacks faced.

The 38-year-old head coach doesn’t seem to know what he wants to do at the quarterback position, but his statements send contradictory signals.

In the preseason, Maye completed 21 of 34 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown. He has already shown flashes of ability that have caught the attention of the coaching staff. But no one knows when Maye will trot onto the field as a starter.

It doesn’t sound like Mayo knows.
