Although the 2024 preseason is over, the New England Patriots have still not named a starting quarterback in the duel between Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett.
With the focus turning to Week 1, head coach Jerod Mayo has a big decision to make after training camp and three preseason games. But on Monday, Mayo admitted something that may have foreshadowed his decision.
“Jacoby can come in here today and say his shoulder is not good,” Mayo said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. “So I’m not going to look too far into the future as to whether Jacoby could play or not. What I will say is this is a real competition, and I would say that at this point, Drake has outperformed Jacoby. Now, in saying that, we have to take into account all the work that goes back to the spring and the start of training camp. And we’ll see where we land, but those are the conversations that will be had here over the next few days.”
But this is where it gets interesting.
After Sunday’s preseason game against Washington, in which Brissett suffered a shoulder injury, Mayo was asked about the quarterbacks and said, “100%, (Drake Maye) is our second-best quarterback on our roster right now.” Hours later, he made the comment that Maye had outperformed Brissett in the competition.
There are hours between these two quotes from Jerod Mayo. #Patriots themselves seem confused about what to do at QB.

Maye outperformed Brissett in the preseason, which is a factor in this competition. But is it the deciding factor? We’ll see.
Still, this is great news for Maye’s chances of being the starter in Week 1.
