Jordan Montgomery admits Scott Boras ‘messed up’ free agency with his stubborn approach

Arizona Diamondbacks starter Jordan Montgomery was one of the last free agent signings of the year. Like agent Scott Boras’ other clients, Montgomery spent most of the offseason hoping for a high-profile contract before finally signing a one-year deal as a pitcher in Arizona.

With the 31-year-old potentially facing another free agency transfer, Montgomery didn’t mince his words when discussing how last year’s foray into the open market went.

“Obviously Boras kind of messed it up, so I’m just trying to put the offseason behind me and forget about it,” Montgomery told Mac Cerullo of The Boston Herald.

Montgomery signed a one-year contract with the Diamondbacks that included a player option for the 2025 season. He will make $25 million this year and could earn the same amount in 2025 if he exercises the option.

Alternatively, he could return to free agency and get another chance at a long-term contract, although his on-field struggles this year will certainly impact his earning potential.

Montgomery fired Boras as his agent in April and is now represented by Joel Wolfe and Nick Chanock of the Wasserman Group.

In 2024, Montgomery posted a 6.44 ERA in 19 starts, striking out 67 batters in 95 innings and posting a WAR of -1.5, the worst season of his MLB career.

He is clearly disappointed that he did not live up to his potential in the last free agency, when he had just won the World Series with the Texas Rangers, posting a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts.
