Jordan Montgomery criticized his former agent Scott Boras for his disastrous free agency last offseason.
The Diamondbacks left-hander was reportedly interested in joining the pitcher-hungry Red Sox over the winter, but instead signed a one-year, $25 million deal to go to Arizona just before Opening Day.
“I had a Zoom call with (the Red Sox), that’s really all I know. It went well,” Montgomery said, according to the Boston Herald. “I don’t know, obviously Boras kind of messed it up, so I’m just trying to put the offseason behind me and forget about it.”
Just weeks after signing with the Diamondbacks, Montgomery parted ways with Boras and joined Wasserman, a rival baseball agency.
Montgomery was one of four Boras clients to sign late in the offseason, along with Blake Snell, Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger.
He was expecting to benefit from one of the best seasons of his career in 2023, posting a 3.20 ERA in 32 regular-season starts before dominating the postseason (2.90 ERA, 31 innings) for the Rangers, who won the World Series.
For the 31-year-old left-hander, the 2024 season in the desert was miserable.
Montgomery has a 6.44 ERA in 19 starts, prompting the Diamondbacks to move him to the bullpen on Friday to give right-hander Ryne Nelson a spot in their starting lineup.
Additionally, he didn’t make his debut until April 19 after missing spring training and being out for a month with knee inflammation.
Montgomery has an option agreement worth $22.5 million.
If he starts four more times, making a total of 23 starts, he will be entitled to $25 million.
