Juvenile and Mannie Fresh reminisce about “Back That Azz Up”

On Monday (August 12), Juvenile and Mannie Fresh gave a new interview with The Breakfast Club. During the conversation, the New Orleans legends discussed “Back That Azz Up,” which celebrated its 25th anniversary. The track served as a catalyst for the rise of bounce music and its transition into the mainstream.

“I can’t remember the exact date, but I can remember where we were,” Juvenile said when asked about the moment the song was created. “We were in Nashville.”

Mannie Fresh added: “I kind of hit the table and he was rapping and I was like, ‘Oh, shit, we got one.'”

Host Charlamagne tha God also asked about Lil Wayne’s appearance on the rousing classic. “Wayne was hanging out in the studio making sure he was there,” Juvenile recalled, before his Big Tymers counterpart continued the story. “(Wayne) was like, ‘No way I’m not on this song,'” the veteran producer said. “I think he saw it too. That he was supposed to stay here. No one else was there. He was just hanging out in the back. Then when it was done, (he) just showed up like a leprechaun or some shit and was like, ‘Boom, look at this.'”

“Back That Azz Up” appeared on Juvenile’s quadruple platinum album 400 degrees in 1998 before being released as an official single the following year. In addition to taking over the radio, the danceable work also reached the top 20 of the Billboard 200 before earning a gold certification for all involved. The track was subsequently sampled or interpolated by numerous artists, including Kanye West, Drake, City Girls, Tyga, NLE Choppa, Chris Brown, Teyana Taylor, and more.
