How “Your Favorite Pie” is judged at the Kentucky State Fair
Judges taste and decide on the “Your Favorite Cake, Any Kind” contest. They started with 30 cakes and narrowed the selection down to one winner before the Kentucky State Fair.
After reading a few complaints about the winning entry in the My Favorite Pie contest from an Ohio resident, I felt compelled to respond. The rules are set by the Kentucky State Fair and there are no rules that exclude entries from other states.
In the past, a woman from Indiana won the My Favorite Pie category. I disagree with those who say all contestants should be from Kentucky. What if the Kentucky Derby had a new rule that only horses from the state of Kentucky could race? What if the Indianapolis 500 only allowed contestants from the state of Indiana? If these people are so upset because a contestant from another state won the prestigious blue ribbon of My Favorite Pie, they should contact the board of directors of the Kentucky State Fair.
The rules can be changed so that only Kentucky residents can submit to the Kentucky Fair. I suspect this could negatively affect attendance and the overall acceptance of the fair by Ohio and Indiana residents. As an Ohio resident, I hope we allow the submission of cakes, livestock, fruits and vegetables, quilts, and all categories by out-of-state entrants to the Ohio State Fair.
