Killeen Hairdressing School offers haircuts for 25 cents to start school

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – OG’s School of Hair Design is offering 25 cent haircuts to Central Texas families for the ninth year in a row.

The program is funded by donations that the barber school collects throughout the year. Participants have the option to pay more than the $7 for the haircut. The school takes that money and uses it for their 25 cent haircut program.

This program is designed to help parents prepare their children for the return to school. Katie Grant, a mother from Killeen, said it helps her family make this time of year go more smoothly.

“This way we can get all the kids’ haircuts done at once and at the same time people learn how to deal with young children and cut their hair, because in a regular hair salon it can be very difficult,” Grant said.

The idea came from Kevin Lane, the school’s lead instructor, who wanted to give people the opportunity to get their hair cut at a price not seen in decades.

“I decided to bring it back,” Lane said. “It reminded me of my childhood when my older brothers would cut people’s hair in the neighborhood for 25 cents. So I decided to do it again in the community.”

Michael Thorpe, a regular participant for 20 years, said the program is an important part of community building.

“A program like this shows us that there are people in the community who want to use their skills and gifts to help each other, and that’s the great thing about it,” Thorpe said.

August 13th is the last day of the discounted haircut promotion.
