Kim Mulkey didn’t expect to star in a rap video with Lil Wayne | Entertainment/Life

Who had LSU coach Kim Mulkey’s appearance in a rap video with Lil Wayne and basketball star Flau’jae Johnson on their 2024 bingo card?

The victory comes courtesy of the music video for Johnson’s new song with Lil Wayne, “Came Out a Beast,” which not only features her teammates but also begins with clips of Mulkey speaking to her players during halftime of their game against Miami in the Elite Eight round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Mulkey is as surprised by the turn of events as everyone else.

“I never thought I’d be mentioned or even seen in a rap video with Flau’jae, and especially not with Lil Wayne,” Mulkey said. “I know my own kids freaked out when they heard Lil Wayne say my name in the video.”

Mulkey said she listened to the song to find out exactly what Lil Wayne said about her in his verse.

“Something sparkly like Coach Mulkey? Did he say that?” she asked.

Later, after consulting with her daughter MacKenzie Fuller, Mulkey confirmed that Lil Wayne said, “Diamonds sparkle like Coach Mulkey.”

Overall, Mulkey says she is impressed with Johnson’s efforts.

“I am so proud of Flau’jae, both on and off the court. What a talented young lady!” Mulkey said. “Coaching her is a true blessing.”

The music video, released Monday, was partially shot at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and features LSU basketball players Sa’Myah Smith, Last-Tear Poa, Mjracle Sheppard, Aalyah Del Rosario and Jersey Wolfenbarger. It begins with a team meeting and a voiceover by Mulkey.

The video is packed with LSU references and even features lookalike actors playing LSU stars Shaquille O’Neal, Sha’Carri Richardson and Joe Burrow.

Johnson, a junior, was one of the top recruits in 2022 and played a key role in Mulkey’s tenure as head coach of the LSU teams, including their national championship win in 2023. The new season begins on November 4.
